Leica Q3 43 - resolution depending on DNG size and crop factor

Hi,

I did some snapshots to get a better understanding how the image quality might suffer from cropping from 43mm to 75mm with the Leica Q3 43. I shoot always DNG & Jpeg at the same time.

First I did 2 shots with the DNG setting to "L" (=60MP). I shot the scene first with 43mm and then with the 75mm crop. After that I changed the DNG setting to "M" (=36MP) and made again the same shots @43mm and @75mm crop. I wanted to find out whether the Leica Q3 43 will make a different Jpeg file or not, depending on the settings in the DNG menu.

As it turned out, the Jpeg files are the same, no matter which DNG resolution you choose! Both jpegs have around 20MB for the 43mm and around 8MB for the 75mm crop. No matter wheter you put DNG to 60MP or to 36MP. That are good news. In case you do not want to shoot at 60MP all the time, you can choose 36MP for the DNG file (pixel binning), get a higher dynamic range in each photo and the Jpegs will have still the same resolution.

Even at 300% enlargement, I do not see a difference between the two Jpeg images. Cool... Daumenhoch

With DNG set to 60MP, each DNG file is around 70-80MB big, depending on the scene. With DNG set to 36MP, each DNG file is around 40-45MP big, depending on the scene. Thanks to this you save a lot of space on your memory card and on your harddrive.
